How to Do Perfect Boxer Braids

Boxer braids have become a huge trend lately, and we have a lot of our clients asking for tips on how to achieve their sleek, fierce look. Higher and tighter than your typical french braid, these pigtail-style braids are perfect for the gym, Studio Paris, or even brunch with your lover at Grandma J’s Kitchen. Better yet – they’re easy to do and will stand up against a convertible ride or unexpected windstorm. Give our quick and easy tutorial a try!

1. Don’t wash your hairhow to do boxer braids

If you want those braids to stick in place and to be as smooth as possible, it’s best not to wash your hair for a day or two. That’s why these braids are so perfect for any post-gym outing! If you absolutely must wash your hair, you can use a texturizing spray or powder to achieve the same results. Then, prep your hair with Moroccan Oil to make it smooth and silky.

2. Part your hair down the middle

This one might seem obvious, but we’ve seen a few people try to rock boxer braids with a side-part. Don’t try this. Just… don’t. After you’ve parted your hair, secure one side with a ponytail and brush out the other.

3. Start braiding!

Here it goes. Split a small section of your hair at the front into three parts and start braiding! You can do a traditional french braid, or, if you’re a little more well-versed in the land of braids, you can try out a double Dutch. It’s important to remember to keep your braids TIGHT, and think about the shape of the braid and create a long, smooth arc as you’re braiding.

4. Finish strong

After you’ve safely and tightly brought your braid to the nape of your neck, then you can continue braiding with a standard braid (or plait) until you reach the end of your hair, securing it with a small hair tie at the bottom. Then, carefully expand the braid a little to give it an effortless, disheveled look. Spray with hairspray, smile, and congratulate yourself for a job well done.

Note: Boxer braids easily expose any root regrowth, so perform any necessary touch ups with Color WOW (you can find it at Sorelle).

5. Repeat

You’d look pretty silly with only half of your head braided, wouldn’t you?
